Food waste bins

Food waste bins,
out and at home

In 2022 we asked a question: should the people who make food waste take responsibility for it? So we put pay-as-you-go food waste bins in zero-waste shops. Then neighbours asked back: can I have one at home?

Using a Bokashi bin at home

  1. 01Add scraps as usualOne bin holds about half a month of scraps for a family of four.
  2. 02Sprinkle Bokashi branA thin layer after each addition, then close the lid. No smell.
  3. 03Drain the liquidOpen the tap every 2–3 days. Diluted about 1:100 it’s a plant feed — use it the same day.
  4. 04Seal for three weeksIt becomes early-stage compost. Mix with an equal amount of soil and wait a week or two, or bury it in a field.

To order a home bin (about 14 L or 20 L, with Bokashi bran and a compost guide), message us on WhatsApp.

What goes in?

✅ Yes
  • Fruit peel
  • Veg trimmings
  • Eggshells (rinse raw egg off)
  • Coffee grounds*
  • Herbal tea leftovers*
  • Soup leftovers (solids)
  • Expired food without additives
❌ No
  • Meat (raw or cooked)
  • Oily or salty food

*Even better dried first — in the sun or the oven.

Collected scraps go straight to farm compost, and farmers don’t take meat (it attracts pests), so we don’t accept it even if fermented.

04

When it’s full

1

Bring it to our drop-off

At 環保黎 in Yuen Long. We take it to nearby farms to support local farming.

2

Compost it yourself

Fermented scraps aren’t soil yet — mix with earth and wait 2–4 weeks before planting.

3

Use a food waste machine

Another option, with GREEN$ points — though there it mostly becomes energy rather than going back to the soil.
